Pigment Problem Scar

These scars are usually flat but a different colour to the surrounding skin, which can make them stand out as browner or whiter.

What do they look like?

  • These scars are usually flat but a different colour to the surrounding skin, which can make them stand out as browner or whiter.
  • They are often caused by trauma or burns which took a while to heal, and are different in their cause and treatment to Vitiligo (see below).
  • They can occur anywhere on the body but are more common in skin that is usually exposed to the sun e.g. faces, arms, legs.

How can this scar be improved?

  • Scars like these which have scarred darker in pigment can respond well to laser treatment to lighten and blend the darker colour to more closely resemble the surrounding skin.
  • Scars like these which have scarred lighter in pigment can respond well to surgical scar revision, with a treatment of spray-on-skin (ReCell) to put some of your own pigment cells back into the lighter areas to try to make more pigment.
  • Scars like these often benefit from scar therapy in addition to surgery and/or laser to ensure the new scar makes the closest match of pigment possible and reduces the risk of it getting thick or red.
